AUSTIN, TX. Sarah Kim (right), owner of Scissors Sound Hair Salon, keeps her business open for now, but is uncertain about the future as the coronavirus pandemic continues to worsen. Hair appointments have tapered off since January and have now almost completely stopped. Kim has lived in the U.S. for 30 years but still has family in South Korea. She is astonished by the lack of face masks and depleted grocery stores here, as it is not the same in South Korea. In South Korea, she says, people are working together to make sure the curve is flattened. Her intern, Hael Seok (left) was notified that she may have to fly back home to South Korea because of the coronavirus. She is uncertain whether or not she will be able to find a flight.

AUSTIN, TX. Nov. 15, 2020. Valerie Romness (left), Editor and Director of The Challenger street newspaper, and Emmy Sawvel (right), a homeless advocate who previously experienced homelessness herself, hug the Tree of Remembrance to celebrate the lives of people experiencing homelessness lost this year in Austin. This year, the number of deaths reported was 256. The names were read aloud and live-streamed to a virtual audience at the Tree of Remembrance along Town Lake, while the in-person attendees played music, decorated the tree, and shared stories about the people they knew.

SAN ANTONIO, TX. Students from White Oak HS cheer when their marching band makes finals at the UIL State Marching Band competition. The 3A East Texas high school performed as the only military marching band at the competition. Military marching bands have diminished in popularity compared to corps marching bands – who take the field with props, themed choreography and elaborate attire – making military bands the black sheep of marching band competitions. Despite the odds stacked against them, White Oak made finals, then placed fourth in the competition for 3A schools. For many of the students from the small East Texas school, it was their first time traveling to a big city. The day culminated in excitement, tears and a bittersweet success, as changes to U-I-L’s judging rubric will make it virtually impossible for military bands to compete in the same competition in future years.

AUSTIN, TX. Dec. 7, 2020. Helen Davis has been living at a ProLodge – a city hotel-motel converted to emergency housing for at-risk homeless individuals who need a place to isolate. She worked at Goodwill before the pandemic started, but she since lost her work and contracted COVID-19. Later this month, she and other hotel residents will be turned to the streets again, as the ProLodge converts to a transitional housing facility.
